The Education Trust

The Merchant Adventurers of the City of York have a long and proud history of supporting education. When the company was founded and Hall built in 1357 Merchants supported the training of apprentices, many of whom went on to grow successful businesses and become Merchant Adventurers themselves.

Today the aim of our charitable trust is to support business and enterprise education, with the current focus of providing opportunities for young people in the city.  Several projects are currently running to fulfil these objectives.

Merchant Adventurers’ Experience

Through the Merchant Adventurers’ Experience, all York Primary Schools have been invited to a fully funded visit to the Hall for key stage two children.  For more information on this initiative, please click here.

The Merchant Adventurers Business and Enterprise Course

The second project, a collaboration with the York Independent and State School Partnership (York ISSP) and York University, has seen two cohorts 30 year nine and ten pupils take part in an innovative Business and Enterprise project.  For further details please click here.

Discovery Lectures

The University of York and the Merchant Adventurers have worked in partnership for over 25 years to deliver a series of annual lectures delivered by leading academics at the University. The Science Discovery Lecture has run since 1996 as a platform to inform the people of York about discoveries made at the University, focusing on important contributions made to academic knowledge in the pure or applied sciences, and how that contribution can be applied to mankind.

The Arts Discovery Event was added to the programme in 2010, to explore similar discoveries and their impacts made in the humanities.  A Business based lecture is planned for 2024 to complement the existing programme.  Visit the news and events page for details of future lectures.
