Where is the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall?
The Hall is located between Fossgate and Piccadilly, in the heart of York city centre, with the postcode YO1 9XD.
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
No, advance booking is not required for general admission – you can pay on arrival at the Hall.
What are your opening times?
Usual opening hours are from 10am to 4pm, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Opening times may vary and the Hall can occasionally close for private events, so it’s best to contact us before you travel.
How much is admission?
There is a standard adult admission charge, with concessions for students and seniors, and free or discounted entry for selected groups such as York Pass holders, York residents (50% off with proof of address), carers and some partner schemes. See our Tickets & pricing page for full details.
What payment methods do you accept?
The Hall and Merchants’ Coffee House are cashless sites. We do not accept American Express.
Is my ticket valid for more than one visit?
Yes, for the price of a single visit your ticket gives you 12 months’ free admission from the date of your first visit.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden of the Hall and in the Merchants’ Coffee House. No dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) are allowed in the Hall.
Does the Hall close for events?
Yes, the Hall sometimes closes for weddings, dinners and other private functions. If you are planning to visit more than a week in advance, we advise you to contact the Hall.
Is the Hall accessible for visitors with limited mobility?
The Hall is fully accessible to wheelchair users; visitors with specific access needs are encouraged to contact the Hall ahead of their visit for detailed advice.
Do you offer free entry for carers?
Yes, carers accompanying a paying adult who needs assistance receive free admission.
Can I leave my bag?
We have limited room for bag storage so these can be left in our cloakrooms at your own risk.
Is there a café and gift shop on site?
Yes – serving locally roasted coffee and home-made cakes, the Merchants’ Coffee House is the perfect place to pause for a brew while immersed in history.
Our on-site gift shop offers locally sourced gifts, historically themed souvenirs and items linked to the Hall and its collections.
Do you have guides available in other languages?
Yes, we have written guides in other languages and our Bloomberg Connects guide also provides translations.
Do you offer school visits or educational sessions?
The Hall welcomes learning groups. See the website or contact the team to discuss specific learning requirements and visit options.
Do you offer group visits?
Yes, pre-booked groups and tours are welcome. See the website or contact the team to arrange group visits and any special requirements.
