What to expect from a group visit
Whether you’re planning a standard tour or something tailored to your needs, we will help you uncover one of York’s hidden gems.
Led by our Museum Director, your group will explore the splendour of the Great Hall, the atmospheric Undercroft, and the calm serenity of the 15th-century Chapel.
Discover the history, architecture and artefacts in the Hall – all cared for by the York Merchant Adventurers Company who still preserve the Hall’s legacy today.
Our group tours
Guided Tours
Our guided tours offer a unique perspective on seven centuries of history – all under the roof of a building unlike any other.
Comfortably accommodating groups of up to 40 people, the Hall provides a stunning context in which to explore the remarkable history of the Company of Merchant Adventurers and its significance beyond York.
Price: £8.50 per head
At an additional charge, the Merchants’ Coffee House is also available to provide refreshments and light bites prior to or after your tour (pre-booking required).
Self-guided groups
Our self-guided group tours provide visitors with the opportunity to explore this fantastic Grade I Listed building at their own pace.
Groups will be provided with information about each of the three spaces that served the original functions of a medieval guild: the Great Hall for business and social gatherings, the Undercroft for charitable activities, and the Chapel for religious worship.
We offer self-guided groups £1 off per person on the standard admission price. Tour leaders, blue badge guides and coach drivers are free of charge.
Learning beyond the classroom
Supporting national curriculum content for history, citizenship and geography, the Hall’s bespoke tours and handling sessions invite students to engage, question, and discover.
If you're planning a visit with your school, let us take you on a journey through York’s past - with lessons that reach far beyond its walls.
